Graphic Happy New Year
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Iron County School District's Transportation Department arranged for special education students throughout the district to visit Parowan Utah's Winter Wonderland. On Tuesday, Three Peaks Elementary students could hardly contain their excitement as they climbed inside a gingerbread house, posed as an elf and of course, visited Santa! Parowan Chamber of Commerce and city officials were on hand to greet the students and give them a cup of hot cocoa. The lights may not have been as bright as they are at night, but magic was in the air.

Who knew math could be this much fun! Students in KC Fotheringham's class at Cedar Middle School use their math skills to "escape" the Home Alone room. Ratios and proportions were the name of the game as students used clues and math equations to get the combination to unlock the next clue.

While people throughout Iron County tuned in to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, Cedar Middle School Band Director Kelly Ball was actually a part of it all. Ball performed as a member of the Saluting America's Band Directors parade entry. Ball joined other band directors who represented all 50 states and U.S. territories. To become a member of the prestigious group, he first was nominated by a colleague, and then sent an application to the director. There were more than 900 applicants and only a small group made the cut. Prior to the parade, the group also played Amazing Grace and Taps at the 911 Memorial. Ball said it was a special experience as they were the only group allowed to play there. "Rehearsing alongside colleagues from all over the United States was a lifelong dream," Ball said. "I was excited to represent my former and current students." The sponsoring organization behind the Saluting America's Band Directors project is the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation, based in Pickerington, Ohio.

Vision Iron County Meeting announcement
Fiddlers Elementary celebrated its 40th birthday with song, dance and plenty of memories. Current Principal Michelle Hall told students and visiting alumni some fun historical facts from the year 1983, when the school opened. Former teachers and administrators were invited to the ceremony. First Fiddlers Principal Steve Baker spoke about what it was like to open the new school. Originally, 300 students were expected, but 350 students started the school year. Now the enrollment is more than 565 students. Students entertained those gathered with a version of the original school song and recitation of the current school motto. Following the ceremony, former staff gathered in the library to reminisce with old friends and look at old yearbooks and scrapbooks. Current students celebrated with a dance party in the gymnasium.

A phone call from a child who is crying can stir up all kinds of emotions for a parent. Scammers are playing on that vulnerability and calls targeting parents are on the rise. Reports of parents receiving such calls have been reported at some of our elementary schools. If you receive a call like this during the school day, please do the following: * Call dispatch at 435-586-2955 and report the phone call. * Call your child’s school to reassure yourself that your child is OK. * Do not give the caller personal identifying information by speaking your child’s name. * Stay calm. * Keep your social media settings on private so scammers do not have access to information about your children.

Iron County students participated in the Cedar Breaks Youth Art Contest. Out of 180 entries, three art pieces created by Iron County School District students were chosen among the best, including Grand Prize winner Arlee Mortensen from Enoch Elementary. Korbin Larsen, Iron Springs Elementary, and Remington Lake, Enoch Elementary, were winners at their grade level. The pieces may be viewed by the public at Southern Utah Museum of Art. An awards ceremony will be held Sept. 21 with an open reception from 7-8 p.m. Teachers were trained in the printmaking process by Alisa Peterson from SUU ArtsFusion and then learned about wildlife, geological features, weather patterns, and flora specific to Cedar Breaks National Park. The teachers then developed arts integrated lessons and taught their students about monoprints.
