Secondary Curriculum

Language Arts

The Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Team of the Iron County School District is a dedicated group of teachers that meets several times a year to improve the English Language Arts instruction for middle school and high school aged students.

Physical Education and Health

The Physical Education Core utilizes appropriate instructional practices to develop competence and confidence in a variety of lifetime activities and movement forms, including sports, dance, outdoor recreation, and physical fitness. The emphasis is on providing success and enjoyment for all students. Knowledge of the relationship between proper nutrition and a consistent fitness regimen is the common thread running through the core. Students develop life skills through cooperative and competitive activity participation, and learn the value of a physically active life.

The goal of physical education is to develop healthy, responsible students who have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to work together in groups, think critically, and participate in a variety of activities that lead to a lifelong healthy lifestyle.

Mathematics

Iron County School District uses the Utah Core Standards to provide clear expectations regarding student learning and to guide the content and skills that every student needs to be college and career ready. Utah has two sets of Standards for Mathematics: The Standards for Mathematical Practice and the Standards for Mathematical Content. These math standards inform teachers what students will achieve at each grade-level. While the content and depth varies from grade to grade, the math practices are the same across grade levels. They include:

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively

  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

  • Model with mathematics

  • Use appropriate tools strategically

  • Attend to precision

  • Look for and make use of structure

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Career and Technical Education

Career and Technical Education (CTE) provides all students with a seamless education system from public education to postsecondary education, driven by a Plan for College and Career Readiness/SEOP. Through competency-based instruction and hands-on experiences, students obtain certified occupational skills, culminating in further education and meaningful employment. CTE prepares students for careers that are most in demand and that are part of the economic development of the state.
