Welcome to a snowy Friday and the weekend, friends! Based on the weather forecast for today and tomorrow, you may have plans for staying home, staying warm, and maybe reading a good book. Or, perhaps a day on the slopes skiing. Whatever you choose, I hope the weekend proves rejuvenating, and that you stay healthy and safe. With this cold weather, and the challenges it can present to our facilities, maintenance, and custodial teams, I want to send a sincere thank you for clearing our parking lots, sidewalks and entry ways. I truly appreciate the service you give to keep us safe and warm and our facilities functioning well so that learning and teaching can be done in a comfortable environment. Here’s this week’s update from our nursing team:

Total Positive cases since August 25th – 602
Total student positive cases – 441
Total employee positive cases –161
Total current active cases – 13
Total recovered cases – 589
Positive student cases related to school attendance – 36
Positive employee cases related to school attendance – 12
Total number of employees and students currently quarantined – 59
Total number of students quarantined since August 25th – 2,554
Total number of employees quarantined since August 25th – 201

As I have been reflecting on my time here in the Iron County School District over the last week or so, and thinking about the message I’d like to send today, I remembered a video clip I showed in Opening Institute about four years ago. The title of the clip is “Yes I Can” and it was put together for the Rio Summer Paralympics in 2016. I believe that, especially given our school and community circumstances this year, its theme is especially appropriate today. I have watched each of you do really hard things over the last year. I know that many of you have been taken to the brink of exhaustion and discouragement, but more often I have seen determination, love and care in your countenance. You have been amazing, and your work and service has been inspiring. You are all “Super” humans!

With much love and appreciation,

Shannon
