Iron County School District superintendent Dr. Shannon Dulaney has been selected the 2020-2021 Utah Superintendent of the Year by the Utah School Superintendents Association. Dr. Dulaney currently serves as president of the association.

“I can think of no greater advocate for students than Dr. Dulaney.  She is a role model to superintendents around the state and is always willing to help and listen to her peers.  Shannon is a calming influence through turbulent times and someone whose opinion is sought when there are tough decisions to be made.  She is quick to smile and laugh, and make you feel that you have been friends forever.  Utah is indeed lucky to have Dr. Dulaney representing public education,” states Lexi Cunningham, Executive Director of USSA.

Dr. Dulaney is, at heart, a teacher. Since she was in the 4th grade Dr. Dulaney knew she wanted to be a teacher. She cares about the students and teachers of Iron County and spends her time visiting classrooms, talking to students and teachers, and connecting with the community she serves.

While serving as superintendent of Iron County School District, Dr. Dulaney has been a leader in supporting the social and emotional needs of her students and teachers.  She understands that students need to be connected to their schools and have adults who support them.  She has presented her work to superintendents and school board members throughout Utah.

“This high honor also means Dr. Dulaney will be considered for the National School Superintendent of the Year award,” says Cunningham, “which will be announced in February 2021 at the American Association of School Superintendents Convention.

Her philosophy in life, as well as her career, is reflected in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “The purpose of life is not [only] to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

Iron County School Board Chair Stephen Allen notes that “I am not at all surprised that Dr. Dulaney is receiving this award—we know how exceptional she is. We are delighted that her peers are honoring her for her accomplishments. She has led our district with honor and distinction and she cares deeply about our students, our teachers and our community.”

Students, faculty and staff agree that Dr. Dulaney is a visionary leader with a deep desire to improve student learning and achievement.  Her focus on students is evident as she leads out instilling a growth mindset and empowering all who work with her.

“I am continually impressed with her drive, dedication and commitment to the Iron County School District” says Cedar High School Principal Terri Sanders, “and I am honored to work under her direction.”
