Iron County School District Nurses provide services in the following areas:
I. Current health Issues
- General Health Issues
- Students with medical concerns that may need interventions at school
II. Health Education– Nurses teach various health topics to classes and staff during the school year
- The Open Airways program from the American Lung association is presented frequently at different schools at different times as need and schedules allow.
- Open Airways permission form (see form above)
- The 5th grade Maturation is presented each year as part of the 5th grade Utah State Curriculum. See permission form under “Health forms”.
- Maturation Power point programs – Boys & Girls
- Dental programs are presented in the both the 1st and 2nd grades yearly during Dental Health Month in February. Contact your students school for date and time.
- Teacher Education on Medical Issues for Students
- Medical Alerts – If there is a medical concern/problem noted on the registration form, this is entered into the Power School program. This allows teachers to access this information.
- Health Care Plans – A specific plan that is developed for your student when a teacher or staff member may need specific instructions to intervene on your students’ behalf if there is a medical problem at school. This plan is made after consultation from the parent/guardian and physician. The plan could involve many different medical conditions. It needs to be signed by the parent or guardian, physician and school nurse. Example of some of these plans could be a severe allergy that could require medication at school such as a antihistamine, or Epi- Pen. heart conditions, seizures, diabetes, hemophilia, leukemia or any medical condition (temporary or chronic), that may require interventions on the school’s part to keep your student safe and healthy. If your child has a condition that may need a health plan, contact your school nurse.

V. Screenings – Vision, Scoliosis, Hearing
- Hearing – see district Audiologist schedule
- Vision - Initial vision screening is held at each Elementary and Middle school in the district during the fall. Follow up screening for absent and new students is completed during the school year. If a student does not pass, the nurse will send a letter requesting that the student be taken to an eye specialist. We welcome and appreciate PTA volunteers to assist in our screenings. See the individual school for the scheduled date or contact the PTA if you can volunteer. Vision permission form - (see form above)
- Scoliosis – Scoliosis screening is conducted in the month of January in the Middle Schools. The girls are screened din 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, and boys are screened in 7th and 8th grade. If there is a concern after the initial screening, a second screening is conducted with a second medical specialist. If there is still a concern, a letter will be sent home referring the student to a specialist – (see form above)
VI. Training
- CPR and First Aid Classes
- The nurses are all American Red Cross instructors. Classes are usually held in November and January at the District office.

About our Nurses
Lauri Baumgartner - Registered Nurse
RN, BSN Lauri is a native of Cedar City. She received her RN degree from Weber State University, and her Bachelors degree from Southern Utah University. She has worked as an RN for 21 years. The last 10 years has been at the school district. She worked at Valley view medical center in medical/surgical, OB, and same day surgery for 15 years. She is a mother of four and a grandmother of four.
Margaret Clark - Registered Nurse
RN, BSN from the University of Utah. Margaret is a mother of five children. She has worked as a nurse with the school district for 10 years. She has held many positions as a public health nurse at the health department and has worked in the clinical setting in the ICU at Valley View Medical Center, Dixie Regional Medical Center, Salt Lake City and Alaska.
Lindsey Finch – Registered Nurse
RN, BSN: Lindsey comes to Iron County School District as a registered nurse sine January 2010. She attended Weber State University and graduated with an Associate degree in Nursing in 2005. She further pursued her education and received a Bachelor degree in Nursing in 2009. She has experience in the hospital setting in the medical/surgical, same day surgery, post anesthesia care unit, endoscopy, and house supervisor areas. She has also worked as a home health nurse, and has taught CPR for four years. She is married and has three beautiful children.
Susan Bussio - secretary
Susan has worked for school district for 11 years. She is responsible for many hours of data input in the Powerschool computer program. She is a Cedar City native. She has three children and three grandchildren. She also works at the Southern Utah University library.
Kathy Stringha- secretary
Kathy has worked for the school district for 16 years. She first worked in the food service area and now works with the nurses as a secretary. I love my job.
Dottie Nielson - secretary
Dottie has worked for the school district for 5 years. She is from Fremont Utah. She has two boy and two girls that attend Iron County Schools.
