PROTECTION OF ATHLETES WITH HEAD INJURIES

In compliance with House Bill 204 and Utah State Law 26-53-101, 201, 301, and 401 the following rules will be followed regarding student participation in athletics and suspected traumatic head injuries or concussions.

  • Coaches and persons responsible for students during practice and sporting events will be trained in recognizing the symptoms and signs of traumatic head injury and concussion.  Each school principal will be responsible for managing this training.
  • A child will be immediately removed from a sporting event or competition if a concussion or traumatic head injury is suspected.
  • The child suspected of sustaining a traumatic head injury or concussion will be prohibited from participating in a sporting event until the student receives medical clearance, in the form of a written statement, from a qualified health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of traumatic head injury and concussions.
  • Prior to permitting a child to participate in a sporting event, a parent or legal guardian signature must be obtained indicating that they understand this policy.
  • A school nurse is permitted to assess a child who sustains a concussion or traumatic head injury during school hours on school property.  School nurses are prohibited from providing a written statement permitting the child to return to free play or physical education class after sustaining a concussion or traumatic head injury unless the nurse has been trained in the evaluation and management of a head injury.
