ATTENDANCE POLICY

Statement of Philosophy-

In order for a teacher to effectively teach a student, the student must be in the classroom each day. In order for a student to be in the class room each day a concerted effort must be made by the parent, student, and school toward that goal. It is the responsibility of each teacher to provide meaningful learning activities, from the beginning until the end of class each day. It is the responsibility of the school and district administration to support the teacher in this endeavor. Each lecture, class presentation, demonstration, practice, drill, etc., is part of a plan designed to help each student learn. When a student misses any part of the class it is impossible to remediate the student with the same quality of instruction. A poor attending student’s academic performance will improve with consistent, daily school attendance. It is also essential that we prepare students for a world that will require them to possess and understand the importance of the life skills of punctuality, dependability, and accountability. Through cooperation and communication between parents, students, and the school, and through following this policy, I.C.S.D. students will be able to benefit, to the highest level, from their educational experience.

Parent responsibility-

  • Parents are expected to have their students at the school on time and prepared for the entire day.
  • When a student is absent, the parent must call the school to excuse the student within three (3) school days. If the parent fails to call within the three days, the parent must discuss the issue with an administrator to have the absence excused.
  • Parents are encouraged to be familiar with the district calendar and school schedule to avoid scheduling vacations or appointments during the school year or day.
  • Parents are expected to be aware of their student’s attendance. This may be accomplished through power school or any direct contact with the school.

Teacher Interventions-

  • Individual teachers will include procedures for dealing with absences, tardies, and missed work for their class in their individual course disclosure.
  • Teachers are required to submit attendance for each class daily.
  • Following an absence the teacher will confer with the student and remind the student of the class policy. Not later than the third unexcused absence in a quarter, the teacher will contact the parent via telephone, other electronic means, or in person, to discuss their students’ attendance and academic issues and consequences. The teacher will document the contact in Power Teacher.
  • Following the fifth unexcused absence, and being unable to resolve the issue, the teacher will refer the student to the administration.
  • For unexcused absences, the teacher is not required to allow the student to make up missed work; however, individual school remediation programs may be used to hold students accountable for missed work. 

Administrative Interventions-

  • The school may require a doctor’s note if deemed necessary due to excessive absences whether excused or unexcused.
  • In the case of excessive absences (excused or unexcused) the school administrator may require a parent/student conference to discuss options to address the problem.
  • The school may utilize the Truancy Support Center as an intervention for secondary students.
  • Parents of elementary students with excessive truancy may be referred to the Iron County Attorney for educational neglect.
  • The Fifth District Juvenile Court will be used to address excessive truancy. This will include a referral to juvenile court for the student, and may include a referral to the Iron County Attorney’s Office to the guardian for educational neglect.
  • Schools will seek opportunities to provide positive incentives for students who maintain a high level of attendance.

Graduation Ceremony Participation- Privilege

The administration of boundary high schools reserve the right to deny participation in the graduation ceremony to seniors with less that 90% attendance or to those who have violated the law or safe school policies.
