Escalante Valley Elementary's Volunteer & Employee of the Month

Volunteer - Yessica Garcia has been a great asset to several of our ESL students this year.  Yessica is fluent in both English and Spanish and has spent many volunteer hours working with our ESL students.

Yessica drives from New Castle to Enterprise and goes out of her way to arrange for a babysitter for her two younger children every time she comes out to the school to help.

She works one on one with English learners, helping them complete writing, math and reading assignments.  Yessica is currently helping two students who have only written in Spanish to put down their thoughts in English.  Even when the students that Yessica works with are absent, Yessica is willing to help out any other student in need.  Yessica has a great rapport with the students she works with.  The students know that she wants them to be able to understand what is going on in their classrooms and to be successful in school.

Yessica is always smiling and happy and her cheerful attitude rubs off on everyone she comes in contact with.  We have really enjoyed having Yessica volunteer in our classrooms.  --Mrs. Jeanette Putnam, Teacher at Escalante Valley Elementary

Employee - Mrs. Shari Reber has worked in the school for over 6 years.  She has worn a number of hats.  Her first love is preschool where she shined with her ability to interact with students.  She was animated, musical, kind, and obviously loved the little ones.  When migrant cutbacks required us to use Shari elsewhere, I appreciated her willingness to accept more challenging (less playful and lighthearted) work in the building and sincerely felt that the preschool was losing an important component of creative interaction.

However, during those same years Mrs. Reber (as one of our prep aides) was building an excellent technology program in the computer lab.  She took the initiative to develop programs that teach keyboarding and keep our students current on computer skills.  Because she works with the entire student body, she has been able to incorporate the curriculum across grade levels.  As students move from kindergarten through sixth grade they are continually refining the basic skills learned previously.

Mrs. Reber has been willing to attend numerous trainings to add to her technology expertise and develop her teaching skills.  Her classroom management skills have become those of a master teacher.  She has made teacher prep time a valuable part of our students’ days.

Along with this, she is providing tier 2 and tier 3 interventions for some of our most struggling students.  She has a special compassion, understanding, and acceptance for those students that do not fit the ideal student model.  She sees each child as an individual and accepts where they are at emotionally and intellectually.

Although I thoroughly resent how nice she looks in her clothes, I honor Shari today for her contribution to the school and personally thank her for her loyalty, expertise and dependability. --Mrs. Pam Robinson, Principal at Escalante Valley Elementary
