School News, January 30 - February 3, 2012
Enoch Elementary - Enoch Elementary students are busy preparing for our upcoming Spelling Bee later this month. We hope parents will encourage students to participate. Additionally, the science fair committee recently sent home information regarding the upcoming science fair. Our school has a strong tradition of amazing student experiments. A quality experiment takes time, so students should soon be committing to the experiment of his or her choice now. Self-discipline is the life skill our school is focusing on this month. The Marvin and Jessie assembly featured this week helped students realize that excelling academically takes commitment and determination. Procrastination and fostering poor study habits makes it hard to be the best student possible. A high five goes out to students who consistently hand in assignments on time and go the extra mile to succeed. Behind successful students you will find parents and guardians committed to academic excellence. Thank you for having high expectations for your children.
Fiddlers Elementary - We are in the middle of celebrating our Model Mustang winners. Each day for four days a class from each grade level sits at a decorated table and gets a special treat to recognize their accomplishment. It's fun to see how many students have earned this award. We are proud of our students and grateful to their parents. It's interesting to see that so many of our students are getting excited for the Superbowl. Kids are so much like their parents. It makes me smile when they ask who we think will win and then enthusiastically agree or disagree. It goes to show that children are learning every day in every environment even when we are not intentionally teaching them. Let's never forget that we influence them all day every day.
North Elementary - North Elementary continues to prepare for our exciting transition this fall. During the past two weeks all of our teachers have traveled down to Walter Bracken Elementary School in Las Vegas. Bracken has been a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) elementary school in the Clark Co. School District system for the past eleven years. They had wonderful programs that helped their students improve greatly in their achievement, making it one of the most successful elementary schools in Las Vegas. It was great to catch a vision of what we want to do at North Elementary! We also had a wonderful visit with a number of parents out at Iron Springs last week. We were able to address some of their questions about our program at North. In addition, we received great news from the school district last week. The school board has approved bus transportation each school day to and from North Elementary from Iron Springs Elementary and from Fiddlers Canyon Elementary. We feel confident that this service will help students in more areas of the city/county gain access to the excellent programs we’ll be offering this fall.
South Elementary - We wanted to thank everyone who came out and participated in the McDonald’s Fundraiser earlier this week. It was very successful and we appreciate all your support! Also, congratulations to Mrs. Darcy Little’s 5th grade class for winning the food drive contest that was held last week. They collected over 300 items that will be donated to local charities. The class earned a party to reward them for their efforts. On Monday, February 6th, we will have Family Movie Night in the gym, starting at 6:00. The movie that will be shown is Dolphin Tale. Everyone is invited to attend, but please note that children must be accompanied by at least one parent during the evening.
Three Peaks Elementary - The Three Peaks faculty and staff are looking forward to the visit of the district directors on February 6th to discuss possible changes to the insurance program that is offered. On the 8th, District Reading Specialist, Leslie Adams, will be providing professional development on LETRS. All students are busy studying spelling bee lists that have been sent home by our wonderful PTA. The bees will be divided into primary and intermediate divisions and will be held on February 23rd. Fourth grade teacher, Clay Carter, will again be acting as chairman for this year's science fair. Packets will be sent home with each student this week. Boys and girls, with the assistance of their parents can begin making plans for their projects. The school science fair will be conducted on March 15th. Teachers Kylee Burnett, Melinda Dotson, and Shannon Miller will be participating in four days of Smartboard training during February and March.
Canyon View Middle - CVMS has adopted the ‘Fuel Up and Play 60’ program sponsored by the Utah Dairy Council and the NFL. Health/PE Teacher Brenda Killian helped secure a $3000 grant to help us promote healthy eating, purchase additional PE equipment, and promote the program. Students with PE second semester will enjoy a trip to Brian Head on February 7th to ski and snowboard. Our Performing Arts students will present ‘Once On This Island’ on Friday, February 10th @ 6:00 in the CVMS Auditorium. The annual Honors Eighth Grade Science Fair was held on January 19th. All participants showed insight and hard work. The category winners were: GEOLOGY—Taylor Bradshaw, 1st; CHEMISTRY—Aubrey Spencer, 1st, Kenzie Maness, 2nd, Coby Causey & Mallory Thiele Henricks, 3rd (tie); BIOLOGY—Matthew Matheson, 1st, Abby Shakespeare & Allyson Berri, 2nd (tie), Bella Bronsema, 3rd, Cassie Peck, Honorable Mention; PHYSICS—Morgan Duncan, 1st, Xavier Stoker, 2nd, Kaidden Larsen, 3rd. Cedar Middle - CMS participated in a canned food drive on behalf of Iron County Care and Share. In a competition with Canyon View Middle School, we are proud to say we won with 3,762 cans! SUU is providing tickets to an athletic event to CMS, and the advisory classes with the highest number of cans collected won pizza and doughnuts. Spirit Day is every Friday, so students should wear their CMS T-shirts. Those students will be eligible to receive a prize. Be prepared because you never know which Friday will be prize day! These shirts are available in the office for $5. Spirit Week is coming up—February 13th -17th.
