Iron County School District, Utah

The first school in Iron County was dedicated on December 23, 1851 in Parowan, Utah. Later in 1853, school was also held in Cedar City at the Old Fort. Later in 1856 the first school in Cedar city was built. Iron County School District currently has eight secondary schools, nine elementary schools and two pre schools.

Professionalism

  • Administration – Work toward increased visibility by spending more time in classrooms, attending special events, and promoting open communication.
  • Teaching Staff – Improved communication with parents via telephone, email, and instructional websites.

  • Guided Professional Learning Communities - Principals will continue to provide guided collaboration using agendas and specific outlines for the discussion of student data and program summary standards.  Monthly administrative PLC’s will be scheduled as part of principal’s training.
  • Technology in the classroom – Continued training for using technology in the classroom.  Emphasis will be placed on the use of SAMS 2.0.  All administrators and teachers will be trained on SAMS 2.0 and will be expected to implement its usage in instructional planning.
  • Common Core – Continue to work toward implementation of common core in math and language arts. 
  • Elementary teachers will standardize grade reporting as a percentage to facilitate usage in SAMS.
  • Continue support of programs to include LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading & Spelling).
  • Rigor & Relevance will be expected for all instructional time.

Evaluation

  • The number of students proficient on all end-of-level tests, in all sub-groups, will increase by 2% or will maintain a 90% level of student proficiency.
  • 100% of end-of-level tests will be taken on line.
  • Utilize data from Explore, Plan, and ACT tests to guide instruction for each student towards post-secondary readiness.
  • Emphasis will be placed on the use of a wide variety of formative assessments.
  • All teachers will be evaluated annually using the Istep instrument (Senate Bill 256).

Tasks

  • Establish a committee to review ICSD grievance and due process procedures (ICSD Policy GCP).
  • Provide monthly training for the established SAFETY PROCEDURES of the Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Training will be provided on bullying awareness and prevention to include regular school time, extra curricular activities and student transportation.
